Day 1 – Module 1: Patient Suitability and Pre-Consultation Preparation
This theory day will help you to understand appropriate patient selection. You will learn how to effectively triage patients, prepare professional pre-assessment reports based on patient-provided responses to questionnaires and image submission, and provide an estimated fee calculation and quotation ahead of an in-person consultation.
The format includes a full day in the clinic with Dr Mark Tam. As a group (maximum of 4 delegates), you will review and discuss pre-assessment case studies, learning the core requirements for pre-assessment and patient selection.
Learning Objectives
- - Effective patient triage using pre-assessment techniques
- - Identifying suitable and unsuitable candidates for hair restoration surgery
- - Recognising contraindications, scalp conditions, and medical considerations
- - Preparing preliminary reports to outline suitability and initial treatment recommendations, provide a basic quotation, and invite to an in-clinic consultation.
Day 2 – Module 2: Consultation skills and Measurement Techniques
Dr Mark Tam uses a unique method to map and measure the treatment area 'TAM+M' clinically proven to determine the exact amount of hair follicles required at a specific density, essential to better planning and excellent results. A consultation can last up to 2 hours where Dr Tam discusses expectations and will work with the patient to design the hairline they desire, while providing expert advice.
- - Taking a thorough medical and lifestyle history, including attention to relevant contraindications for hair restoration intervention
- - Honing and improving your consultation skills and patient interaction
- - Accurate measurement management, the skills needed to precisely calculate treatment area size(s) and follicular unity graft requirements for effective placement density
- - Treatment recommendations, including understanding when treatment staging may or may not be best suited, and hairline design planning
- - How to assess the donor area(s) appropriately for all stages of treatment, including sustainability management
- - How to take professional and consistent clinical before and after photographs
Day 3 – Module 3: Observation of surgery 1 to 1
On this surgery day, you will have the opportunity to observe a surgical case throughout the whole procedure. From start to finish, you will watch as Dr Mark Tam takes the patient through the preparations for surgery and the pre-operative care. You will observe the extraction of the follicular unit grafts, the preparation of the recipient site, and the implantation of the prepared grafts. Aftercare is vital, and you will observe Dr Tam’s protocols for caring for the hair following transplant. You will have the opportunity to ask questions as you observe on the surgical day.
The format includes a full day in clinic with Dr Mark Tam with exposure to a single surgical case. To ensure you can enjoy detailed observation, this day is held with a maximum of 2 delegates, who will rotate positioning alongside Dr Tam and his team of technicians.
- - Understanding the patient’s surgical journey, including pre-op preparation and aftercare, alongside the surgical procedure itself
- - Understanding the coordination of the surgical team, including the interactions between the surgeon and technicians, to ensure a smooth-running timetable and optimised graft handling and transplantation
- - Familiarity with the techniques used for follicular unit extraction and implantation, including advanced and regenerative options
Day 4 – Module 4: Optional Surgery Day
There is an optional surgery day available with the opportunity to prepare a patient for surgery and perform hair transplantation under the supervision of Dr Mark Tam. You will also go through the management of post-surgery care and aftercare instructions.
The format includes a full day in clinic with Dr Mark Tam as a one-to-one learning day with practical, hands-on surgery. The day is held with a maximum of 1 delegate, plus a single hair technician to accompany the delegate.
Delegates will be required to bring their own patient model; their suitability for hair transplant surgery must be confirmed and pre-approved by Dr Mark Tam. The day will be performed as a practical assessment of your skills under the direct observation of Dr Mark Tam, who will review and provide feedback on your processes.
- - Demonstrate that you know how to plan and perform a FUE hair transplant surgery on your model patient
- - Show that you can apply the principles of design, technique, and patient safety, already honed during the prior observation and theory days
- - Demonstrate your awareness of postoperative complications and appropriate mitigation
- - Be able to review your processes and make reflective learning observations
